While I made maps for Vietnam Glory Obscured, we had a small team which meant I also modeled, textured, animated, and rigged hundreds of models for VGO. Models included land, air, and sea units; infantry units; buildings for USA, NVA, and civilian; as well as natural assets such as trees, ground plants, and waterfalls. Below is a small selection of assets which I created for VGO.

Waterfall

The Waterfall was a large set piece I made to be used in our maps for Vietnam Glory Obscured. With flowing water cascading down the rocks, caustic water reflections, and mist with a rainbow it stood out in any map it was placed in. I used transparency masks for the water flow and the caustic water effect. The animation frames for the caustic water effect was laid out on one texture sheet and I animated the UV's to move to each frame of the caustic water animation. The water had a slower moving base texture with a faster moving water texture overlayed on top that scrolled along the UV's. With the mist I made a rainbow texture that used a scrolling cloudy texture as a transparency mask that gave the effect of mist coming off the waterfall while catching the sunlight creating a rainbow. The mist was on a flat plane that billboarded toward the camera.

Jungle Tree

The Jungle Tree ended up becoming a major game play component in Vietnam Glory Obscured. Any infantry unit that was under one of the jungle trees became "stealthed" to enemy players; only when an infantry unit fired their weapon or an enemy infantry unit would be very close by would their location be revealed. This allowed infantry units to set up ambushes at choke points, spy on enemy bases, or become a safe haven for retreat. Needless to say, when a squad of infantry units encountered an enemy squad in the jungle, it erupted into a frantic fire fight. More details on how these Jungle Trees affected game play for both the USA and NVA faction can be seen below.

USS Enterprise CNV-65

The USS Enterprise was the first nuclear-powered aircraft carrier and still holds the record for the longest navel vessel in the world. The "Big E" entered the Vietnam conflict in December 1965 and launched 125 sorties on the first day. In 1974, the Enterprise received the first two squadrons of operational F14 Tomcats. The Enterprise was such a big part of naval operations in Vietnam, it had to be included in Vietnam Glory Obscured.

The Enterprise is used during our Bombardment game play mode. In Bombardment, USA factions can take command of Capital Ship (either a Battleship or Aircraft Carrier depending on the map). Scattered throughout Bombardment maps are Control Centers, if 2 or more Control Centers are captured by a player, they will gain control of the Capital Ship that is on the map. The Enterprise houses F14 Tomcat aircraft that will continually bombard a selected target. These aircraft are automatically replaced by the aircraft carrier if they are destroyed. The video below explains more about the Bombardment game play mode and shows the Enterprise in action.
